“Community POWER” – Provides a Unique Opportunity for Waste Reduction

Residents of the Twin Cities are creating nearly seven pounds of garbage per person every day! The Summit-University Planning Council   received a grant to address this issue through a unique partnership with the Solid Waste Management Coordinating Board and RethinkRecycling.com.

The Summit-University Planning Council is launching a waste reduction education campaign in several multi-family housing units in the neighborhood. We plan, among others, to improve signage, engage residents in various recycling, hazardous waste and waste reduction activities, and a guide and newsletter produced in different languages that will discuss practical waste reduction strategies. We hope to involve at least 200 households in 2-4 different low-income multi-family housing complexes in our project.

The Summit-University Planning Council received the grant through an innovative partnership called Community POWER: Partners on Waste Education and Reduction. The Solid Waste Management Coordinating Board created Community POWER in 2001 to tap the skills and networks of community organizations to educate residents. From 2008 to 2009, over 700,000 people in the Twin Cities metro area were reached with waste reduction messages and over 22,000 people have taken active steps to reduce waste.
